The myth of the Superwoman is the title of a new book on working mothers in managerial positions earning less than men who also have to remain in charge of organizing the home and children, that is, about you and me. I have not read it but I think is a truthful and interesting title. Because if this is women´s liberation, God come and see it, because you don´t get a single FREE second for yourself. I imagine the book will be also linked to the idea that women are multitasking and men, as a race(with few exceptions that prove the rule), are single-tasking, basically, they can not speak and chew gum at the same time. I do not say maliciously, it is true. Because they (many) help, assist and participate in household chores. But it is more an executive help. That is, you ask something and he does it. Honey, can you set the table?. And he does. Can you change the baby?, And he changes the baby. But they have to be concrete and very specific orders, they get lost if you are too generic in your instructions. A few days ago I went on a business trip with a female colleague. Before arriving at the airport, my husband was already phoning me: - Where are the baby´s shoes? - In his closet? - Nope - Well, maybe in the bathroom or on the table, wherever we took them off - Well, thet are not, can´t find them anywhere - I say this with love, what do you expect me to do from the airport?. They have to be somewhere. Look for them. - I thought you knew where they were - I have no idea but, I´m sure that you have a better chance at finding them - So you do not know ... - No, and I'm getting on a plane so it´s up to you... Two hours later, my colleaugue´s husband called her on the mobile: - Your daughter says she wants to wear her jeans and not what you left, what else should she wear with them? I repeat, specific instructions, it´s no use to say "dress the child." You either leave the clothes out and tell him in what order he must put them on or God knows how your child will end up dressed. Really, sometimes it would be easier to do it yourself. I must confess that my husband helps, when he can though, because the rest of the time he is working. - Love, can you do the shopping? - Impossible, I'm working - Ah, well, then I´ll do it since I am here in the office from 8 to 6.30 drinking tea with some friends And they do not understand that even if you are working, children need new clothes, shoes of their number, to have their vaccine shots, have the dentist look at that wobbly tooth, you have to meet with their teacher, buy the costume for the school play, a birthday gift for their friend, take them somewhere interesting (for them) at the weekend, plan the holidays, take them to the birthday, and buy food, milk and breakfast when what was in the pantry it's over ... even if you sare working. And such coordination can be a bit beyond them. It is a dirty job but somebody´s gotta do it. So a typical day for a superwoman is leaving children and their backpacks ready, work all morning, eat a sandwich while making the purchase at Carrefour or similar pushing the cart with one hand and looking at the blackberry with the other, back to the office, pass by the pharmacy, go home, make an appointment with the doctor (dentist, etc. ..), give dinner to the older kids, bathe the baby, read a bedtime story and put the kids in bed, give the bottle to the baby, put him in the crib, eat something, prepare your clothes and the kids ´ for the next day, collapse on the couch not even wanting to call that friend with whom you haven´t talked for centuries and crawl to bed. But all that, feeling very accomplished. It seems to me that this superwoman thing is not a myth, is a Chinese story. And labor conciliation, an urban legend.
