I used to go to the movies. I used to go a lot. Every weekend, sometimes I saw up to two or three movies (I still remember a magnificent double session Sunday when my Martas and I saw "The Remains of the Day" and "Shadowlands" in two different theaters , each at a different end of Madrid). I was the queen of pink triangles ar Trivial Pursuit. I saw everything, including of course all the films nominated for the Oscars, I hosted great Academy Awards parties, pajama parties with lots of coffee, breakfast, pools, games and fierce criticism of Ana Garcia Siñeriz, I was the official reporter in university and then at the office the morning after the Oscars. Ever since I heard on the radio the Oscar awarded to "my" Garci for this jewel that is "Volver a empezar" (then there were not televised yet) until a few years ago I didn´t miss a ceremony. I also went to the theater, ballet, concerts .....
In recent years, my film knowledge is much more focused. On Disney fundamentally. If you are playing Trivial Junior special Disney edition, I am your girl. If you need someone with a decent grasp on any adult film of the last six years, then look elsewhere. Today I could not even tell who is nominated for this year´s Oscars (well, yes, Colin Firth, who by the way was brilliant in Nanny McPhee), or which movie deserves it more. I do not even watch them on video because I'm so tired at night that my concentration level is not enough for more than a short, silly tv series, certainly not for a melodrama about the war in Iraq, families destroyed, children abducted , etc ...
So now I am an illiterate in matters of modern cinema, in the classics I can still defend myself, weñll always have Paris after all .. But if you ask me about Disney princesses, watch out. But I do not remember the last time I went to the movies with another adult to watch a movie, "serious", committed, with strong language, a bittersweet ending and a message that stirs the conscience (well, Tiana and the frog meets some of these premises but not all). Although Disney (and Pixar), have given me some unforgettable moments, not only by how much my children enjoy these films and the moments we share, but also cinematographically: that first half hour of Wall-e, Monsters Inc., the magic of Up, the genius of Toy Story ... And I must confess that when the toothless cajun firefly from "Tiana" finally meets his beloved, a tear escaped me.
